At Symbiose, we build tools for evolution to enhance and amplify our humanity.
We believe that conversation is the primary driver of personal growth and societal evolution. Through conversation, we form and deepen social connections, learn from other's experiences, and update our version of reality.
Yet despite the criticality of communications in our increasingly-digital world, the tools we use today are obtuse and remnants of a bygone era. At Symbiose, we have a set of hypotheses for how digital communication should be.
Our company's objective is to increase the quality and quantity of conversation in the universe.
To do this we are currently:
- Releasing an imaginative new messaging and audio chat app, called Fractal (currently in stealth) that brings nuance and serendipity to your conversations.
- Scaling Inwords - our mental wellness app. With Inwords, we've built the world's first AI talk therapist, in an empathic intelligence named Remy. Tens of thousands of members have had hundreds of thousands of long-form verbal conversations with Remy about their feelings and thoughts. Our members report that they feel less anxious, have grown in self-awareness, and are happier as a direct result of their use of Inwords.
- Building a next-gen communications engine and development platform called SymbioseCore. SymbioseCore introduces new abstractions for messaging, live audio, and designable conversational AI agents. While the SymbioseCore platform is currently used exclusively by our products, Fractal and Inwords, we plan to allow external developers and companies to build on our platform to create imaginative new product experience for their audiences.
While our team is currently remote with members distributed across the globe, we are planning on becoming co-located and building our HQ in Miami. About the Role
We're looking for a talented Applied Machine Learning Engineer to join the Symbiose team.
We productize bleeding edge ML models, with a strong focus on Language, to power first-of-their-kind product experiences.
For example in our product, Inwords, we've created Remy - the world's first AI talk therapist. Remy's already had hundreds of thousands of emotional and inspiring conversations with our members who report feeling happier and more self-aware.
We're taking our ML-augmented communications platform to the next level and looking for a driven individual passionate about engineering intelligence at scale.
In this role you will:
- Architect and implement large-scale data pipelines for real-time training and inference across a variety of ML domains.
- Lead, define, and implement state-of-the-art machine learning models, integrated into our platform and exposed as APIs.
- Contribute to a novel long-form multi-modal conversational AI engine that combines human and artificial intelligence. This engine has already powered hundreds of thousands of conversational exchanges, and we're just getting started.
- Advance our Natural Language Generation (NLG) capabilities using large scale transformer-based architectures.
- Influence the strategic direction of our Artificial Intelligence Research & Development efforts.
- Deepen your ML engineering expertise, while gaining exposure to product, design, interface engineering, and backend engineering areas.
- Collaboratively scope, plan, and execute new ML product development initiatives.
- Share your knowledge and expertise across engineering, product, and design teams.

Who You Are
- Experience: You have 4+ years of technical experience writing software with 2+ years of productizing and deploying machine learning models.
- Expertise: You have deep experience with Python and at least 1 production-quality ML-framework. You have a good understanding of Linear Algebra and can implement complex ML-methods as described in research papers.
- Natural Language Practitioner: You have a great understanding of Natural Language Parsing, Understanding, and Generation (NLP, NLU, NLG) concepts and principles. You've trained and deployed models in all of the aforementioned domains. Bonus points for experience with fully automated dialogue systems.
- Theoretically Inspired: You love to design statistically elegant solutions to complex problem from first-principles.
- Pragmatist: You like to deliver performant solutions that work and don't over-index on novelty when comparing different approaches.
- Statistically Intuitive: You have an intuitive compass to identify and amplify signal in data to train models with nuanced understanding of their domains.
- Autonomous: You understand objectives, take ownership, and aggressively resolve ambiguity to solve big challenges.
- Empathetic: You deeply understand people and want to build products that resonate with our humanity.
- Adaptable: You thrive in rapidly evolving environments and enjoy facing uncertainty head-on.

About the Role
We are creating intelligence as a layer above a wide array of ML components including speech synthesis, transcription, NLP, NLU, and generative models.
We are looking for an engineer with a deep understanding of machine learning techniques with specific experience in language and dialog systems.
You will push the frontier of state-of-the-art methods and deploy them in a production environment.
What You'll Do
Collaboratively advance the capabilities, behavior, performance of our novel conversational platform.
Lead, define, and implement state-of-the-art machine learning methods across our technology stack, especially in Natural Language Generation.
Architect, build, and take ownership of a data-driven system informed by users’ conversational behavior.
What We're Looking For
